The back of the soup kitchen was a steel prep table, a walk-in cooler and a screen door propped open for the heat.
I stopped behind a stack of stockpots where I could see through the gap.
Seiji Higa sat on an upturned crate with a paper plate on his knee.
Frank Rapoza sat on the other crate with his boots stretched out.
Between them on a flour sack lay a platter of fried linguica and half a loaf of my mother's sweet bread.
They were tearing the bread in half.
They were sharing it.
"Thirty-one years, cousin," Frank said, chewing.
"And I still think you cheat at cards."
"I do," Seiji said mildly.
"It's the only way I win."
They laughed together, the same low wheeze.
My hands went cold.
"Did you see the girl at the table?" Frank asked.
"Our two boys both gone soft in the eyes."
