Chapter 5: The Pasture Gate
Manny parked his truck at the pasture gate above Honokaa and cut the engine.
He had walked me out of the Higa wharf that morning with his hat in his hand.
Forty men had watched us go, and nobody had dared touch him.
Now it was dusk, and the whole Hamakua coast lay below us, green and gold.
The cattle were low shapes moving in the grass.
I looked at him across the cab.
"You walked into the Higa wharf alone," I said.
"I did," Manny said.
"You could have been shot."
"I figured you'd come down before they got around to it," he said.
He took off his hat and grinned at me.
It was the same grin as in the ballroom, and this time it reached his eyes.
"Get out," he said.
"I want to show you the sky."
I got out.
He dropped the tailgate and sat on it with his boots hanging, and the cooling metal ticked under him.
The first stars were coming out over the ocean.
I stood between his knees and looked at him.
"I've wanted to put my hands on you since the second year I served your table," Manny said.
"You put a soup spoon in my hand and I thought, there she is."
"You never said anything," I said.
"Mari, my family sits across a ballroom from his family's guns once a year," he said.
"What would I say, pass the rice?"
I laughed.
Then I put my hands on his belt.
"Rapoza," I said.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Lie back."
He lay back on the truck bed with his hat under his head and his hands behind it, obedient and delighted.
I undid his belt, his button, his zipper, and I pulled his jeans down his thighs.
He sprang free, thick and flushed, bigger than I had remembered in the dark.
"Oh, hell," he said to the stars.
I knelt on the tailgate.
I took him in my hand first and stroked once, and he swore.
Then I leaned down and licked the head of his cock, a slow circle with the flat of my tongue, tasting salt.
"Mari," he groaned.
"You don't have to."
"I know."
I took him into my mouth.
He was too big to take all the way, so I worked what I could, sucking, with my hand wrapped around the rest.
His hips jumped.
His hands came out from behind his head and fisted in the edge of the truck bed.
"That's, oh, that's so good," he said.
"Don't stop, God, don't stop."
He talked the whole time.
He told me how it felt, and what it did to him, and how long he had thought about this.
Every word was shameless and joyful.
I loved it.
It made me want to give him more.
I sucked harder and drew him deeper, and I hummed, and he made a sound close to a sob.
I pulled back and ran my tongue slowly up the underside, from the base to the tip.
Then I cupped his balls in my palm and rolled them gently.
I took the head between my lips again and swirled my tongue around it.
"Oh, hell, Mari," Manny said, wondering.
"Oh, hell. Where did you learn that?"
"I didn't," I said, with my mouth an inch from him.
"I'm making it up."
"Make up some more."
I did.
I took him as deep as I could, again and again, and every time I came up, I looked at him.
His brown eyes were wide.
