Chapter 7: Laupahoehoe
Dean drove down the Hamakua coast for an hour and did not say a word.
I did not ask where we were going.
He turned off the highway at the Laupahoehoe sign and took the steep road down to the point.
The rain came in sideways off the sea.
At the bottom he parked on the empty lot above the black rocks.
He switched off the engine and sat with both hands on the wheel.
The waves broke white below us.
"You smell of him," Dean said.
"Does that bother you?" I asked.
"It should," he said.
He turned his head.
"It isn't what I'm afraid of," he said.
"What are you afraid of?" I asked.
"That tonight you were the only thing I wanted in the world, and tomorrow you'd say it's morning."
He had thrown my own words back at me, and he had done it quietly, without a smile.
I looked at his still hands.
Then I got out of the front seat into the rain.
I opened the back door, climbed in and said, "Higa. Come here."
He came.
He folded his tall body into the back seat beside me and shut the door, and the rain drummed on the roof.
I turned and knelt over his lap with my knees on either side of his thighs.
The windows were already fogging.
"Hands on the seat," I said.
He laid them flat.
I undid his shirt, one button at a time, and ran my palms over his chest.
He was lean and hard.
There was a scar on his left forearm that I had never seen in the dark of the linen room.
I traced it with my thumb.
"A knife," he said.
"I was nineteen."
"Who?" I asked.
"A Rapoza cousin."
I kissed the scar.
Dean let out a low breath.
"I have never been chosen over my family," he said.
He said it to the roof of the car.
"No one has ever picked me. Not once. You understand? I am what the Higas need, not what anyone wants."
"I picked you," I said.
"You picked both of us."
