The ballroom at the Drake held three hundred people, and every one of them had an invitation with Chase's name on it.
Nobody had reprinted them.
I'd made sure of that.
At ten to four on Saturday, the sixteenth of May, I stood at the side door in navy silk and watched the room fill.
Board members. Bankers. Half the developers in Chicago. Two society photographers.
Holly's father in the front row, alone, checking his watch.
The housekeeper sat near the back in a hat with a feather in it.
Holly had bought it for her as a joke, and she'd worn it anyway.
At four, the side door at the front of the room opened.
Chase walked in.
Not with the groomsmen. Alone, in a black tuxedo that fit him like he'd been born in it.
The room went quiet, then started whispering.
He walked straight down the side aisle and took his place under the arch of white roses.
He folded his hands in front of him.
He looked at me across the room and smiled.
He was waiting.
He'd posted it for two hundred thousand people.
He'd come to take back what was his, and he expected me to ask him to stay.
