Chapter 18: You Decided Where I Live
Nash hit the loft door with the flat of his fist at ten past three in the morning.
He did it five times, and then the door opened, and Gaspard stood there fully dressed, with no light on behind him.
He had not been asleep.
He looked at Nash's face and did not ask what he was doing in Montreal.
"You know," he said.
"You decided where I live."
Gaspard stepped back and let him in.
The loft was dark, with the river lit up behind the glass and a single glass of water on the sill.
Nash stood in the middle of the floor in his coat, still in the 29, with the letter crushed in his hand.
"October thirteenth," he said.
"Yes."
"You ordered the jersey four days before you bet me."
"Yes."
"You had your agent pitch Bernie on the twelfth. You told her it was to make me impossible to trade."
"Yes."
"You sat across from me at that gala, with the rye, and you made me say it. Loser wears the winner's number. You picked the fight. You stood there and let me be the idiot who thought it was his idea."
"It was a very good fight."
"Don't."
"I am sorry."
"Don't be sorry." Nash's voice cracked. "Be something else. Say something I can use. I drove five hours."
Gaspard took a step toward him and stopped.
"Montreal wanted you," he said. "Since August. They asked, and Boston listened, and I knew what would happen. You would be on a plane in a week. They would give you a Cup run and an apartment and a city that cheers in French."
