Chapter 5: Say It Again

The morning show on Boston's biggest sports station started at seven, and by seven-ten the host had already asked Nash about the jersey four times.

"It's a very comfortable jersey," Nash said into the mic, for the fifth time. "I'm told the fabric is breathable."

"Is it true they sent you the real one? Game-cut? Sewn by the Montreal team?"

"I've been informed that it's game-cut."

"Has Lachapelle said anything?"

"He's said a number of things."

"Like what?"

"Like nothing that can go on the radio."

The host and his co-host both howled.

Bernie Costigan stood on the other side of the glass in her black blazer, with a tablet in one hand and a cold coffee in the other, giving him the thumbs-up.

It was Tuesday, two days before Montreal.

Nash had slept four hours.

He had spent two of the other hours replaying a hotel room, a window and a boiler room.

The rest trying to figure out what any of it meant.

"Here's what the listeners want to know," the co-host said. "Everyone's seen the clips. Kids' hospital, hockey rink, the hoodie thing. You and Lachapelle looked, how do I say this, very familiar."

"We play four games a year, I'd say we're familiar."

"No, I mean like you were friends."

"We are not friends."

"Enemies?"

Nash opened his mouth to say yes.

He had said it a hundred times.

It had been true for three years, since the All-Star weekend in Nashville.

He had been twenty-three and cocky and thrilled, and in the handshake line he had stuck out his hand to the best winger in the league.
