Chapter 4: Forty-One Calls

I went down alone.

Rafe stayed at the top of the stairs with his arms folded and said he'd come if I whistled.

I didn't whistle.

The bakery on the ground floor had a line out the door, and every person in it was looking at the roses.

Preston stood on the stoop with his tie pulled loose.

He had not slept either.

"Jo." He held the flowers out. "Thank God. Mother's driver found you. I've called you forty times."

"And I ignored every one."

"Please. Come home."

"To which home?"

He winced.

"Mother had no right to touch your things. I told her so. I yelled at her, Jo. I've never yelled at her in my life."

"You didn't yell at her before the luncheon."

"I didn't know about the luncheon!"

"You recorded it."

He opened his mouth and closed it again.

The woman at the front of the bakery line set her coffee down on the windowsill so she could listen better.

"That was a mistake," Preston said, lower. "I was nervous. It's a habit. I film everything, you know that."

"I know you filmed Cheyenne. And the five before her, and the one before that."

"Jo."

"Six years, Preston. Six women. You sent me every one."

"I never meant it to hurt you."

"Then why did you send it?"

He looked at the roses.

I waited.

Behind him, the driver got out of the black car and leaned against the fender, pretending to read his phone.

"Come back and we'll talk," Preston said at last. "That's all I want. We'll end it with Cheyenne. You can have the guest room if you can't stand the bed. And the Foundation gala is in nine days, and Mother needs Mrs. Aldane at the head table, because the press has been awful."
