Neil dropped to one knee on the wet concrete.

"Hazel," he said. "Marry me. For real this time, at the courthouse, with a clerk and a stamp."

Behind me, four of the crew had come back for their knife rolls.

They stood frozen in the yard under the floodlight with their bags on their shoulders.

Bram didn't move.

He stood beside the open door with his hands at his sides and his eyes on the velvet box.

Neil opened it.

It was my ring.

The thin gold band with the small stone, the one I'd sold on the morning after my birthday.

"I bought it back," Neil said. "The pawnshop on Fourth still had it. It cost me three hundred more than you got."

"Where did you get three hundred dollars?"

"It doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"I'm going to quit, Haze. I swear on my mother. If we make it legal, the debt is ours, not yours alone, and I'll work every day of my life to pay it. Danica's father said he'd leave your mother's room alone."

I looked at him.

I looked at the knees of his good suit in the puddle.

And at the far end of the lot, behind the dumpsters, I saw a white coupe with its headlights off.

"He said that to you," I said.

"Yes."

"When?"

"This afternoon."

"And you came here and read it to me."

"It isn't a script, Hazel."
