I woke Bram with a hand on his chest and read him the message.

He was out of bed before I finished.

"I'm going with you," he said.

"I know. You're driving me. You're staying in the truck."

"Hazel."

"You told me you'd say what you see," I said. "I'm telling you what I decide. I'm going in alone because they've only ever seen me beside a man who owed them."

He looked at me for a long time with his jaw tight.

Then he picked up his keys.

"If you aren't out by sunrise, I'm coming through the door."

"Fair."

"And I'm calling Paula from the lot."

"Also fair."

I put the two-tailed coin in my right pocket and pulled my wet coat over the skirt I hadn't had time to change.

The Lakeshore Room at four in the morning had half as many people, and twice the smoke.

The sixty regulars who stayed were the ones with nowhere else to be.

Neil was at the back table in a chair that had been pulled out and left empty.

Danica's father sat across from him, with his cigar unlit.

Danica stood at his shoulder in the blue dress she had worn on the lawn, creased now.

The floor boss leaned on the pillar beside them with his arms folded.

Neil saw me first.

"Haze," he said, and nothing else came out.

"Hello, Neil."

"Mrs. Gerrard is not a member," Danica's father said, without looking up.
