Chapter 24: Heads
A year to the day after the thirteenth toss, I walked into Alder Street Bistro on Bram's arm.
The same hostess looked up from her stand.
The same candles burned in the same little glass cups.
I stopped a step inside the door.
"We can go somewhere else," Bram said at once.
"No."
"Hazel."
"I want this table." I squeezed his arm. "I'd like to sit at it and eat a whole meal."
The table by the window was set for three.
My mother was already there, parked at the end in her wheelchair with her good cardigan on and a day pass in her purse.
"You're late," she said. "I ordered you both the bread."
I kissed her cheek.
Six months ago the board over the kitchen's loading door had finally been finished.
It said KELLER & ENTWISTLE, in his father's lettering and my own money.
I paid my share on the first of every month, and he wrote the receipt himself and handed it over with a straight face.
A waiter came to the table with menus.
He was young and thin and he went pale when he saw my face.
"Ma'am," he said. "I don't know if you remember me."
"I do."
"I'm so sorry about last year. I didn't know if I should have said anything. I just, I'd seen the coin come out so many times, and the tails always..."
"You gave me the coin," I said.
"I couldn't stand it anymore."
"It's the kindest thing anyone did for me that year."
