Chapter 7: The Blue Folder
Paula Winslow's office was above a dry cleaner, and she charged by the hour and said so before I sat down.
"Tell me about the day you got married," she said. "Everything that was signed."
"Nothing was signed except the certificate. Neil did the rest."
"Think again."
I looked at her desk, at the neat pile of statements I had carried in.
Then I saw the lake house, and the rented chairs, and Neil's hand on my back.
"A folder," I said slowly. "A blue one. After the vows, Neil said the photographer needed releases. There were colored tabs where I was supposed to sign."
"How many?"
"I don't know. Six, maybe eight. I signed them against the railing with the bouquet under my arm."
Paula took off her glasses and set them on the blotter.
"The credit line on that account was approved a few weeks after your wedding," she said.
"It lists a guarantee signed by you. If it's real, you owe the forty-one thousand."
"I never read it."
"I believe you. A guarantee signed on pages you were told were something else can be undone."
She tapped the desk. "But I need the pages themselves, and Neil has them."
"He'll never give them to me."
"No." She put her glasses back on. "Then you'll have to make him want to."
