Chapter 21: The Board
On Monday at nine the board room smelled like the same burned coffee, and this time I sat at the table.
Nobody had given me the water pitcher.
It stood in the middle of the glass, and the gray-haired investor poured her own.
She sat at the head in her running shoes, as before, with a pad and no phone.
Four board members sat in suits.
Dash sat across from me with his hands flat, and he did not look at me more than twice.
Ingrid Vollmer sat at the far end, with her cane across her knees and a manila folder in her lap.
Gus stood in the doorway in his best uniform, because I had asked him to be there.
"My committee voted at eight," the investor said. "They said yes."
A board member exhaled.
"On one condition. The ownership cloud is gone. The rival fund withdrew in writing at seven this morning, and I have it here."
