Chapter 15: The Hill House
The back road climbed through tea bushes in the dark, and the little green car took it in second gear.
Zhaoran sat in the back seat with a blanket around his shoulders and Lin Zhi's hand in his.
He had not let go of it since the shed.
The trees closed in, and the road became gravel.
At the end of it stood a long old villa with a tiled roof and a moon gate, and a single lamp lit in the courtyard.
In the gate, leaning on a black cane, stood Madam Xie.
She was wearing a gardening apron, which was the most shocking thing Lin Zhi had ever seen on her.
She did not look surprised.
She looked at the two of them coming up the path, limping and leaning, and her stern face did something unsteady.
"Grandmother," said Zhaoran.
"Stand up straight," said Madam Xie.
"I can't," said Zhaoran.
"Then lean on your husband."
Lin Zhi got his shoulder under the arm, and they went forward together.
The old woman put out one hand and laid it on her grandson's face.
She said nothing for a long time.
When she spoke, her voice was perfectly dry.
"You've lost weight. Your uncle has been feeding you badly."
"You knew," said Zhaoran.
"I knew in the second week," said Madam Xie. "I told you your father's favorite horse had died, and you squeezed my hand twice."
"It was a lie. I wanted to see if you were listening."
"And you said nothing," said Zhaoran.
"If I had said something, your uncle would have found out. I am old, Zhaoran, not stupid. A woman who tells a secret to the wrong room deserves what she gets."
She turned her eyes on Lin Zhi.
They were small and black and unreadable, and he stood up straight under them for the second time in his life.
