Chapter 12: The Reading

The boardroom of Lorne Freight was on the fortieth floor, with a table long enough to land a plane on.

Eight directors sat on one side of it.

Cory's father sat at the head, and Cory sat on his right in a navy suit, perfectly calm.

Mallory was not there, and for that I was grateful.

I had showered at Harvey's house, and I wore a grey dress from the closet he'd emptied for me.

He sat beside me with the leather folder flat in front of him.

He still hadn't opened it.

"Thank you for coming at short notice," said the lawyer, and he laid a sealed envelope on the table. "Mr. Lorne's grandfather left instructions that the reading be held on the first morning after the marriage was recorded."

"After the marriage?" said the director with the white mustache.

"After a marriage, yes. There is a condition."

Cory's father shifted in his chair.

"We know the condition," he said. "He had to be married by midnight. He was. By a stranger from a corridor, but he was."

"That is the first condition," the lawyer said. "There is a second one, and it is on page four."

He opened the envelope.

My husband looked down at the folder under his hand, and for the first time since I'd met him, his fingers were not quite steady.
