Chapter 21: Cory Alone
Harvey stepped forward, and I put a hand flat on his chest.
"Let him talk," I said.
Cory looked at the phone in my other hand, and his face went slack.
"That's Russell's," he said.
"It is."
"He'll say anything. He's a drunk with a boat loan."
"Then you won't mind what's on it."
"Til." He pushed himself off my car. "Listen to me for one minute, without him."
"Harvey stays."
"Fine." His voice cracked on it. "My father is cutting me loose."
I waited.
"He told the board this morning I acted alone. The date, Mallory, the camera. He says he never knew." Cory laughed, and it was an ugly sound. "I did every bit of it for his approval, and he's going to hand me over to save the family name."
"Being handed over runs in the family," I said.
He flinched.
"Give me the phone, and I'll tell the court it was all me," he said. "I'll drop the motion. Your mother will never hear from us again."
"You'll drop the motion anyway."
"Why would I?"
"Because tomorrow at eight I'm holding a shareholders' meeting," I said. "You hold eight percent. You're invited."
"You can't."
"I hold sixty-one. I can call a meeting about anything I like." I put the phone in my bag. "Come and tell the room yourself."
He stared at me.
I think he believed, for a moment, that I would be gentle.
"You've changed," he said.
"I have a bigger room now," I said, and I got into the car.
The boardroom was full at eight the next morning.
