Chapter 16: The Hearing
The family court was a small room with a low ceiling and a clock that ticked too loudly.
Do-yoon sat at the left-hand table in a pale grey suit.
Jae-wook sat beside him in navy, with his waistcoat buttoned for once and his big hand resting on the wood, an inch from Do-yoon's.
Behind them the benches were full.
Journalists filled three rows.
In the second row sat Gi-cheol in a black suit, calm as a man at his own dinner.
The judge was a grey-haired woman with half-moon glasses and no patience.
"Mr. Yeo," she said. "Mr. Hwan. This court has been asked to annul your marriage as a fraud. I will hear the petitioner first."
Gi-cheol's lawyer rose, the same neat man in a charcoal suit who had stood on the hanok step.
He laid out his case in a pleasant voice.
The marriage was ordered by a will.
The parties had publicly despised each other for six years.
They had registered their marriage the morning after signing, before a camera crew that Gi-cheol had not hired.
"And the monitor appointed by the trust visited the home four times," the lawyer said. "I would like the court to see his night report."
