Chapter 4: Wrists

In the morning Do-yoon was gone before Jae-wook woke.

He showered in the guest bathroom, dressed in a pale grey suit, and was at the kitchen island by seven with his laptop open.

He had decided on a policy.

What happened in the dark was a private mistake.

What happened in the day was business.

At 7:20 Jae-wook came down in a robe, with his curls flattened on one side and a pillow crease on his cheek.

He looked at Do-yoon, and at the coffee Do-yoon hadn't offered him, and grinned.

"Good morning, husband."

"Don't."

"You left a mark on my neck."

"I did not."

"Right here." Jae-wook tilted his head to show him.

The mark was small and purple, and it was clearly Do-yoon's.

Do-yoon's face went hot.

"That's from your stubble," he said. "It's a rash."

"A rash that looks exactly like your mouth."

"I have work."

"So do I," Jae-wook said.

He poured his own coffee, still smiling, and drank it standing at Do-yoon's elbow with nothing between them but a robe.

Do-yoon went to the study and worked for eleven hours.

He told himself he never once thought about Jae-wook's hand, which was a lie.

The study was long, with an oak desk that could have seated eight and a wall of windows over the garden.

At dusk Jae-wook knocked on the open door.

He had changed into a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the top two buttons open.

"Ji-ho called the house. The board wants your signature on the transfer sheets before nine."

"He could have called me."

"He did. You didn't pick up. You never pick up."

"I was working."

"I know." Jae-wook crossed the room and set a folder on the desk. "You've been working since you left my bed."

"Our bed."

"Ah," Jae-wook said, softly. "So it's ours."

Do-yoon put the pen down.

Jae-wook stood on the other side of the desk, close enough to touch.

Neither of them moved.

"I said it was a mistake," Do-yoon said.

"I heard."

"It was one night."

"Then why are you looking at my mouth?"

Do-yoon looked at the pen.

Then he stood, because sitting made him feel small, and walked around the desk until he was right in front of Jae-wook.

He had to tip his head back.

"I'm in charge here," Do-yoon said.

"I never thought otherwise."

"Last night, I decided."

"And tonight?"

Do-yoon opened his mouth to answer.

Jae-wook went down on his knees.

He did it all at once and without any show, folding down onto the polished floor.
