Chapter 22: Toolbelt
"Is he still there?" I asked.
"He just left. He said to tell you something." My father swallowed. "He said the house is yours the day you do the sensible thing."
Felix was awake beside me. He'd heard all of it.
"I'm coming," I said, and hung up.
Felix sat up and reached for his phone.
"Don't," I said.
"I haven't done anything."
"You were about to call somebody and buy a mortgage before breakfast."
He put the phone down.
"No silences," he said. "Yes. I was."
"Thank you for telling me. Don't."
The plows had been through Lincoln Park in the night.
My father's house stood on its quiet street with snow up to the porch rail, three stories of red brick, the lights on in every window.
I'd grown up in that house.
My mother had died in the upstairs bedroom eleven years ago, and he'd mortgaged it six months later.
He opened the door before I knocked.
He was fifty-seven and still handsome, in a cashmere robe that had been expensive in 2015.
His hair was perfect. His eyes were red.
"Sweetheart," he said, and opened his arms.
