Chapter 23: The Elders' Table
The boardroom was on the eleventh floor, under a portrait of the old man.
Felix held the door for me at 9:58 on Tuesday morning.
The table was forty feet of dark wood with twelve leather chairs around it.
Every one of them was full but his.
Laurence sat halfway down on the left, with his gold watch and a neat stack of folders.
Priscilla sat beside him in gray silk and pearls.
She looked immaculate and unreadable, as though she'd never worn a reindeer slipper.
The three women from her lunch table sat in a row across from her.
The two gray-haired cousins sat near the top. Four men from the shipping side and the banks filled in the rest.
At the head of the table, beside Felix's empty chair, somebody had set a thirteenth.
"That's not a director's seat," Laurence said.
"No," Felix said. "It's my wife's."
"She's not on this board."
The older cousin put her pen down.
She was the one who'd stopped eating to watch the potatoes at Sunday dinner.
"The old man's rule, Laurence," she said. "Generation first. She sat above you at your mother's table. She sits above you at his."
