Chapter 29: Not Yet
The workshop was so quiet I could hear the glue drying.
Bex had sat up on the concrete. My father had his hand over his mouth.
The apprentice was filming. Of course he was.
I looked at the ring in Felix's palm.
The little antler. The brass from my own motor. The scratches from somebody's sledgehammer night, filed smooth.
I wanted to put out my hand so badly my fingers hurt.
"Not yet," I said.
Bex made a sound.
Felix didn't move. He didn't close his hand, either.
"Okay," he said. "Tell me why."
That was the thing about him. He always asked why.
"Because there's still a clause," I said. "Clause eleven. Until November twentieth, if I leave, the land goes to someone. Every day I'm married to you, part of me knows I'd lose something if I walked out."
"You wouldn't lose anything. I signed..."
"I know what you signed. It's still there. It's still in the contract with my father's handwriting on it."
