Chapter 20: The Gathering
The pack hall had never held so many wolves.
They stood along every wall and filled the loft stairs and crowded the open doors, with the snow blowing in over their shoulders.
The solstice dark came down through the skylight at four in the afternoon.
The council table had been lengthened with planks.
The seven elders sat along it, and at its far end, four men I'd never seen.
The Alphas of the neighbouring packs, down from Lake Placid and Tupper Lake and the high valleys.
Imogen sat in the middle chair in pearl gray, with a black ribbon pinned to her collar for her driver.
Corbin sat on the front bench below her.
He hadn't shaved.
Bram stood against the east wall between two council men, in his shirtsleeves, with silver cuffs on his wrists.
He saw me and straightened, and the council men both shifted their feet.
I walked down the aisle with Hattie on one side of me and Sienna on the other.
Hattie wore her good cardigan, the one with no holes.
Sienna wore no fur at all.
The oldest of the four neighbouring Alphas was a white-bearded man with a hooked nose and hands like roots.
