Chapter 15: The Test Bake
Camille's POV
At four in the morning the bakery smelled of cinnamon and scorched sugar, and Nadine was shouting at a tray.
"It's dry!" she said. "A king cake is a brioche, Camille, it is not a brick."
"It's the oven."
"It's your hands. They're somewhere else."
They were.
They were on the passbook, the little blue bank book Rafe had taken from the Society's cabinet and put in my palm on Sunday night.
"This goes back to the Society on the dais," he had said. "Not before."
I had read it forty times.
Nine pages stamped by the bank, nine withdrawals, the first of every month.
Nadine wiped her hands on her apron and pulled a stool up to the steel table.
"Read me the speech."
"There isn't one," I said.
"Camille."
"There's one line," I said. "I keep writing the same line."
"Which?"
"I chose him."
She put her chin in her hand.
"That's not a speech, that's a text message."
"I know," I said.
"Where's the rest? The part where Odette's face falls off?"
"I'm not going to shout at her, Nadine," I said. "I'm going to ask her a question. One question, in front of everybody, and then I'm going to read the book and let them do the counting."
"What question?"
I told her.
She sat very still, and then she laughed so hard she had to hold the table.
"Oh, that's cruel," Nadine said, wiping her eyes. "That's so cruel. I love it. Say it again."
I said it again.
She made me say it three times, once in each of the voices I use on suppliers.
