Chapter 16: The Petition
Julien rapped on the glass again, and Rafe moved, and I put my hand flat on his chest.
"Mine," I said.
He stopped.
I unlocked the front door and opened it three inches, and the cold came in smelling of coffee and the river.
"What do you want, Julien?"
"Good morning to you too, baby." He held up the envelope. "I'd like to give you something. May I come in?"
"No."
Behind him on the sidewalk the early line had started.
It was two men in work boots and a woman with a church bag, waiting for the doors to open at six.
Julien turned and saw them and lowered his voice into the one he used on the Society.
"It's a petition," he said. "My lawyer filed it yesterday with the civil court. It asks a judge to declare your marriage to Castellane void, since you were never a widow, and to order the bakery returned to the marital property of Beaumont and Beaumont."
"It's my bakery. I opened it with my own savings in my own name."
"That's what the judge will decide." He smiled. "Or we can skip the judge."
"How?"
"I have another page." He slid a second sheet from the envelope. "A simple sale, Cam. You sell the shop to me for one dollar. I withdraw the petition, I go back to Gulfport, nobody says one word at the Benefit, and you keep your fancy husband. Everybody wins."
I took the page and read it.
It was typed, with a line for my signature.
I looked at the line for a long moment.
Then I stepped out onto the sidewalk in my apron and held the page up so the line could see it.
"Good morning," I said to the two men and the woman. "I want you to hear this."
