I Married the Don for the Debt, and My Husband Walked In Alive novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: Ursulines Avenue

Camille's POV

By Sunday afternoon, half the Bayou Rose Society believed my husband had been kept on the Don's boat for eight months.

Julien had told them so after Mass, standing on the church steps with his hat in his hands.

His voice broke in all the right places.

I had stood at the back with Rafe's coat on my shoulders.

I had listened to him say "held against my will" to a woman who had cooked for my wake.

She had looked at me over his shoulder.

Then she had looked at the man beside me.

Rafe had said nothing, because I had asked him not to.

"Let him talk," I'd told him. "Everyone who hears this will know what he is by Christmas."

"Mrs. Beaumont is very sure," Rafe said.

"Mrs. Beaumont has watched him lie since she was twenty-five."

So at four o'clock we were in the dining room on Ursulines Avenue, because Odette had invited us.

She had set the table with her mother's china and the good silver.

A dozen people sat down, four of the Society's wives among them.

Julien took the chair at the head, his dead father's chair, with the carved arms.

Odette said grace, and I kept my eyes open.

She had her hat off at home, and her silver hair was pinned up, and her hands shook only a little on the rosary.
