Chapter 8: The Kitchen Counter

"I did," Rafe said.

He did not look away from me.

"I walked into that kitchen with the marker in my pocket and I said it in four sentences. I'd do it the same way again."

"You waited until I couldn't walk out."

"You couldn't have walked out in any case. Odette's lawyer would have had your bakery by the first of the month." He took a step into the kitchen. "I put the paper in front of you, and I put an end date on it, and I told you the door would be yours."

"You could have asked me to dinner first."

"You would have said no," Rafe said.

"You don't know that."

"I watched you say yes to me in the time it takes to pour a cup of coffee." His voice dropped. "I watched what you were willing to do for a man who left you holding his debt. I wasn't going to give you time to talk yourself back into doing it for him."

I stared at him.

I had wanted him to be sorry.

I had wanted a speech.

Instead I got a man standing in his own kitchen in a good suit, not sorry, telling me he had been right.
