Chapter 9: The Veil
I read Nadine's text twice and put the phone face down on the marble.
"Go," Rafe said. "Sal can have a car at the door in a minute."
"The deed's been at your lawyer's since the wedding. He can look at an empty folder all night." I turned in his arms. "Nadine has a rolling pin. I have you."
"You have me."
"Then take me upstairs."
He carried me up the stairs in the dark, and I laughed against his throat, and he kicked his bedroom door shut behind us.
The lamp was already lit.
Folded on the chair by the window lay a long piece of white tulle, with a comb of pearls at one end.
It was my wedding veil, the one I had dropped in the front hall on Saturday night.
I had thought it was lost.
"You kept it," I said.
"I picked it up off the floor." He set me on my feet beside the bed. "I didn't know what for."
He lifted it from the chair and let the soft cloth run across his fingers.
"I know now," Rafe said.
My heart began to pound.
"Turn around."
I turned.
He lifted my hair off my neck and kissed the skin there, slowly, and I felt the tulle drift down over my eyes.
It was light, and white, and it made the room into a soft blur.
He tied it behind my head with a gentle knot.
"Can you see?"
"Light. Shapes," I said.
"Good. You won't need more."
His hands found the zipper at my back and drew it down one tooth at a time.
The dress fell.
He took his time with the rest.
I stood there with my eyes covered in my own wedding veil, trembling, and I felt his gaze travel over every inch of me.
