Chapter 11: Split Ear
Cassien did not move.
He lay against Isandor's good side with his face in his neck and watched the inner door over Isandor's shoulder.
It opened an inch, then a hand's width.
A man stepped through, soft-footed, in the black and gold livery of the imperial guard.
He held a long knife.
He stood just inside the door and let his eyes find the bed in the candlelight.
Isandor's breathing changed against Cassien.
He was awake.
"Under the wardrobe," he breathed into Cassien's hair.
It was his brother's dagger, which Cassien had thrown there himself.
The man came forward three quick steps.
Cassien rolled off the bed, hit the marble on his shoulder, and slid.
The knife came down into the pillow where his head had been, and feathers went up.
Isandor came off the bed on the other side, naked, with one arm strapped to his chest, and grabbed the candlestick.
The man turned on him.
Cassien got his arm under the wardrobe, and his fingers closed on the moonstone.
The candle went out.
In the dark he heard Isandor swear and something heavy hit the wall.
Cassien came up off the floor and went at the sound.
His shoulder hit a body in a guard's coat.
It was not Isandor, and Cassien knew that at once, because he knew Isandor's body now.
The man twisted, and his knife scored down Cassien's ribs.
Cassien drove the dagger in under the man's arm, upward, where the coat had no plate.
The man made a wet sound, fell against him, and took him down to the floor.
They lay on the cold marble together.
The man stopped moving.
"Cassien."
Isandor's voice came rough from by the wall.
