Chapter 17: Alone, As Asked

Rocco's house in Revere had not changed.

It was a gray brick house behind a hedge, with a brass lamp on the porch, and a light on in the kitchen where I had once stood washing his coffee cups.

Sandro had parked two streets back.

"Alone," I'd said in the car. "That's what the text says."

"I'm not letting you walk in there alone."

"You're not. You're sitting two streets away with your phone on, and when I call, you come."

His hands were white on the wheel.

"Twenty minutes," he said. "Then I come through the door."

He had kissed me before I got out, hard and quick, with his hand tight on the back of my neck.

I carried the gray case under my arm.

It held a blank drive with a label in his capitals, BAR CAMERA, MARCH 14, and I had no other plan than that.

Rocco's driver opened the door, the man with the black mustache from the flower stall.

He took the case from me without a word, and checked my coat and my sleeves and my boots.

"Mrs. Vannozzi," said Rocco from the end of the hall.

He wore a gray sweater and held a cup of coffee, and he smiled the soft smile I had once mistaken for kindness.

"Tesoro. You look tired."

"Where is she?"

"Upstairs, with a sandwich she won't eat. She's a spirited girl." He turned and walked into the living room, and I followed, because I had no choice. "Sit."

I stayed on my feet.

The driver set the case on the coffee table and opened it.

Rocco looked at the label for a long moment.

"So this is where your face is," he said gently.
