Chapter 17: Blindfold
Thursday was Iris's night with Posy, and the house had gone quiet at six.
By nine I had the kitchen lights down to the one over the stove.
I stood at the counter in his flannel shirt and nothing else, with my back against the cold edge and my hands flat on the granite.
Jude came in from the mudroom with his boots in one hand.
He saw the shirt, and the bare legs, and he put the boots down very carefully.
"Good evening, Mr. Maddox."
"Miss Ellery."
His voice had gone rough already.
He crossed the floor and stopped an arm's length away, and his gaze traveled slowly up my legs.
"You're wearing my shirt."
"I'm wearing your shirt," I said.
"Nothing else?"
"Come and find out."
He didn't move.
He reached for his collar and slid his tie off over his head.
It was the dark green one, the one he'd worn to his wife's anniversary mass.
He ran it through his fingers, and I knew exactly what he meant to do with it.
"Can I?" he asked.
"Please."
"Look at me first."
I looked at him.
Then I closed my eyes, and he laid the silk across them and tied it at the back of my head.
The kitchen vanished.
I heard the fridge hum and the wind in the eaves, and my own pulse in my ears.
"Can you see anything?"
"No," I said.
"Good."
His hands settled on my waist.
They were warm and slow, and they didn't hurry.
"Stay still," he said.
"I want to look at you for a while."
I felt his gaze like a hand.
It moved along my collarbone, down the open flannel, across my stomach and between my thighs.
My skin tightened everywhere it touched.
"You're shaking," he said quietly.
"It's not the cold."
"I know it isn't."
He unbuttoned the shirt, one button at a time, with his knuckles brushing my skin.
