Chapter 19: His Word Against Hers

"That's not true," I said.

"I didn't say I believed it, ma'am." The detective's voice was dry. "But he brought a lawyer and a very neat story, and right now it's his word against hers."

"Kelsey has his texts."

"Then I'd like to see them. And the hotel footage. Mr. Harrington's lawyer says the originals are in his safe."

"They're at the Harrington."

"Then I'll meet you at the Harrington," he said. "Tomorrow, ten o'clock. Bring whoever you've got."

I called Kelsey.

She picked up on the first ring this time.

"He told them it was you," I said.

There was a long silence.

Then she made a sound I'd never heard from her.

It wasn't crying.

It was a laugh, low and flat and furious.

"Of course he did," she said. "What time?"

The Harrington lobby at ten on a Friday was busy.

A wedding party was checking in at the front desk, the bride in a white sweatshirt that said MRS. across the front. A tour group in matching T-shirts filled the rest.

I watched her take her keycard from the clerk.

She was laughing at something her mother said.

I hoped her light turned green.
