Chapter 19: The Stage
Thatcher's POV
At seven on Saturday night I stood in my dressing room and gave my resignation to the mirror.
"Members of the board," I said. "It has been an honor."
It sounded like a man reading his own obituary off a card.
I tried it again.
"Members of the board, I resign as chief executive, effective at once, and I thank you for the opportunity."
In my head, a woman in a navy blazer said, "That's an opening bid."
I tried a third time.
"Members of the board, I resign. I would ask only that you leave one front-desk clerk on the night shift, and give her a raise."
The mirror and I looked at each other.
I tore up the card and began again.
It was the sixth draft that stopped me, because it had her name in it, and I did not remember writing it.
On the dresser, my phone buzzed.
It was Lacey, who had never sent me a message before tonight, in all caps.
BOOTH SECURED. I HAVE THE LITTLE BLACK THING. JUNE SAYS ONLY PLAY THE FIRST FOUR MINUTES AND I DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS.
I read it twice.
Lacey had talked her way into the ballroom's audio booth at five with a tray of coffee, and the technician had been so charmed that he left her the key.
June had listened to the first four minutes of the recorder at midnight, in my kitchen, with a hand over her mouth.
She had given it to Lacey in an envelope and said, "Whatever you do, don't press anything past minute four."
I had not asked why.
I knew why, because I had been in the room for the rest of it.
I stood at the window and looked down at the lit-up ballroom entrance, where women in long dresses were getting out of black cars.
