Chapter 14: Biscuit

I took the bus to Pasadena on Monday after work, and I walked the last half mile to his building on my own.

I had a plan for what I would say.

The plan lasted until he opened the door.

He was in gray sweatpants and a faded T-shirt, with his hair flat on one side.

He looked like he had been standing right behind the door.

"Bianca."

Something small and orange shot between his ankles, sat down on my shoe, and screamed up at me.

"That's Biscuit," Eli said. "He doesn't like anyone. Don't take it personally."

I crouched down, and the cat put his whole head into my palm.

"He likes me."

"He's lying," Eli said, but his voice had gone rough.

I stood up.

"I'm still paying you back," I said. "Every cent. I want you to know that before I come in."

"Okay."

"Not tonight. I didn't come with money."

"I didn't ask for any."

"I know you didn't." I held on to the strap of my bag. "I came to say you were right about the walking. You went ahead of me, and you shouldn't have."

"I know."

"But I was wrong about something too. I told you to let me do one thing alone, and then I did it for ten days with my coat on. I'm tired, Eli."

He didn't say a word.

He stepped back from the door and let me in.

His apartment was small and warm and smelled like toast.

There was a couch with a blanket thrown over it and a shelf of books with cracked spines.

On the counter stood a row of coffee mugs, none of them matching.

I sat on the edge of the couch, and Biscuit climbed into my lap.

Eli sat on the far end, very carefully, with a whole cushion between us.
