Chapter 15: The Curb
I put on my jeans and his sweatshirt and went downstairs before I could think about it.
Eli woke when the bedroom door clicked.
By the time I reached the street he was behind me in sweatpants and bare feet, with his keys in his fist.
"Stay on the steps," I said.
"No."
"Eli."
"I'll stay on the steps," he said. "Those are the steps."
Gabe got out of the car.
He wore the black quarter-zip and a smile, and he had the look of a man who had slept in the driver's seat.
"Morning, Bee."
"How did you find this building?"
"I followed your bus last night." He shrugged. "Then I waited to see which door you went in."
"You followed me."
"I followed you because you didn't come home." He took a step closer. "You've been gone all night, and your mother is sick with worry."
"My mother has my number."
"She's scared to call it."
That was probably true, and I hated that it was.
I took out my phone and pressed record.
I held it at my side with the screen out.
"What do you want, Gabe?"
"Dani's making a video." His voice dropped into the reasonable tone I used to love. "A short one. She's going to say she forgives you, and you're going to stand next to her and say sorry. Thirty seconds. Then it's over, and your dad opens the safe."
"And Dani gets to be the generous one on camera."
"Dani gets to stop crying. Isn't that what you want?"
"She doesn't cry. She uses a stick."
His face didn't change.
