Chapter 14: Until the Thaw
I did not run.
I stood with my back against my mother's stone and my daughter against my chest, and I made him come all the way down the row.
"Give it to me," I said.
"Of course," Marcel said.
He held the blanket out at arm's length like a peace offering.
I took it.
It smelled of him, wintergreen and the cedar cologne I had bought him for our first anniversary.
I pressed it over Zuri and stepped back from his hand.
"You followed me from the jail," I said.
"I followed you from Rice's Point," Marcel said.
"I've followed you since Fargo, honey.
"You just never looked up."
"I looked up on Tuesday."
"You looked up at a bathroom window," he said.
He smiled again.
It was a nice smile, and it had gotten him into every house on the Hillside.
"I'm not going to touch you," Marcel said.
"There's a groundskeeper behind that hedge, and he's been watching us since I parked.
"I want to be seen being gentle.
"I want you to see I'm not angry."
I looked at the hedge.
A man in a green jacket stood behind it holding a leaf blower he was not using.
"I hear you saw your brother this morning," Marcel said.
"A kind deputy told me you cried.
"I'd have given a lot to see that."
"You made him your informant at twenty-one," I said.
"You let him pick up a bag."
"I gave a boy a job," Marcel said.
"He was very well paid."
"He took a sentence so you'd leave my name alone."
