"I know what I said," I said.
My voice shook.
I stood in the snow in a borrowed flannel shirt with Zuri against my collarbone, and she sobbed into my neck.
Her whole small body was going like a bird's.
"A room with a door that locks from inside," I said.
"Nobody opens it unless I say."
"Nobody opened it," Mason said, through his hand.
He knelt in the snow with blood running between his fingers.
"He went through the window," Dirk said.
"The pantry window had a latch.
"I walked the front and the back, and I never walked the side."
"You were on the porch," I said.
"I sat on the porch like a damn fool," Dirk said.
"Because you told me no one comes in."
"Dirk," I said.
"I've been watching the door for nine years," he said.
His voice cracked, flat and ugly, as if it had got out before he could stop it.
"He doesn't use the door."
I could not answer him.
I looked at the blood on the snow instead.
"Let me see," I said to Mason.
He took his hand from his mouth.
The lip had split on the left side where a tooth had gone through it.
He grinned, a small bloody grin.
"I've had worse from the winch," he said.
"He hit you."
"He hit me in the mouth," Mason said.
"He didn't hit her.
"I'll take that trade every day."
"Mason," I said.
"I got her out of the blanket's way," he said.
"I'd like it noted that I did it in my underwear."
I started to laugh.
It was a cracked, hiccuping laugh, and then it turned into the other thing.
I sat down on the cabin step with my daughter in my lap and cried into her hair.
Nobody touched me.
They waited.
Mason sat on the step beside me and pressed his sleeve to his lip.
