Chapter 9: The Bay

Dirk's POV

I sat in my truck outside the dental office for eight hours, and I did not tell her.

I parked at the far end of the block with a thermos I never drank from.

I kept the heater off so the glass wouldn't fog.

From there I could see the green door, the waiting-room window, and the gray Ford across the street.

The Ford sat there from nine in the morning until four.

The man in it was Marcel Pellerin's friend, and he wrote down every plate that stopped at the curb.

Mason's truck was the first.

The man photographed it through the windshield and wrote a line in a notebook.

Then he went on drinking his coffee.

I have a good memory for plates and a better one for faces.

At four o'clock she came out into the snow, in her scrubs under her coat, with her hair tied up.

She climbed into Mason's cab.

I saw Mason kiss her.

It lasted about two seconds, through two panes of glass and sixty yards of winter.

I did not look away.

I held the wheel until my knuckles went white.

Then I started the truck and followed the Ford up the hill, two blocks back, to make sure it turned at the top.

It turned.

I drove back to Rice's Point by the bridge, because the other way took me past her mother's street.

I had not driven that street in nine years.

I went straight to the tow garage and did not go into the clubhouse.

I let myself into the bay, switched on one work light, and started to take apart a carburetor I had no use for.

That is how I know myself.

When there is something I can't do, I find a thing to take apart.
