Chapter 16: The Sheriff's Cuffs

Dub's POV

I was in my recliner on the Tuesday before Christmas, with a bowl of cold chili on my belly and the weather on the television.

Dessa walked into the bunkhouse with a pair of handcuffs.

"Dub Rasco," she said.

"You're under arrest."

I laughed so hard that the chili slid off my belly and onto the floor.

"Darlin', on what charge?" I said.

"Twenty years of being the funny one," she said.

She shut the door behind her and turned the lock, and the sound of it went straight through me.

Those cuffs were the old sheriff's county issue, steel, with a number stamped on the chain.

He had arrested me in them once, in 1998, for a fight in a bar in Tulia that I won.

"Give me your hands," she said.

"Now, honey," I said.

"I'm a big man, and I've got a bad hip, and I don't take orders."

She looked at me with those hazel eyes and her head on one side.

"Dub," she said.

"I'm asking you to give me your hands."

I gave her my hands.

I don't know what happened to me in that moment.

She clicked one cuff on my right wrist and the other on my left.

Then she ran the chain behind the iron release lever on the side of the chair.

My hands were pinned at my hip, and I could not have lifted them past my belt if the bunkhouse had caught fire.
