Chapter 26: What He Paid
He looked thinner than he had on the galley screen.
His hair needed cutting.
The Marshall I'd married would have died before he let anyone see that.
"Thea," he said.
"You can come in. You can't sit down."
He came in.
He stood in the middle of my empty living room with his hands at his sides.
His eyes went to the fridge, to the patch with the dozer on it, and stayed there a second.
Then they came back to me.
"I'm not here to ask you for anything," he said.
"Good."
"I pleaded guilty on Thursday. One count. Introducing adulterated drugs into commerce. My lawyer wanted me to fight it."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I signed it." He said it flatly, like a lot number. "Sentencing is next month. They think a year. Maybe more."
I waited.
"The board took the Group. My brother runs it now. My father hasn't called." He almost smiled. "My mother sends soup."
"Is that the part where I feel sorry for you?"
