Chapter 11: The Council Table
The pack hall held two hundred and filled the long timbered room with the smell of sheep, smoke and wool.
Fionn stood at the back wall with his mother's hand on his arm.
At the front, on the raised bench, the six elders of the Council sat in their black coats.
Joxe was in the middle.
Gorka stood in front of them, on the floor, with his thumbs hooked in his belt.
"I call no one a liar," Gorka said. "I only ask what the whole pack saw."
His voice carried to the rafters.
"On Claim Night the moon named my nephew's mate."
Gorka let that sit.
"The stray stood in the Ring and spoke the Refusal. My nephew did not release it."
He turned slowly, so the room could see him.
"Six weeks later, at the Ball, he put his hand on the stray in front of two hundred people and called him his."
A low mutter ran around the room.
"A Refusal left unanswered burns," Gorka said.
"Everyone knows what it does to the one who holds it. It rots him. It softens him."
He let his voice drop.
"An Alpha who cannot cut a bond with a stray is not fit to be anyone's heir."
"A stray," Joxe said, mildly, "has a name, Gorka."
