Chapter 12: Whose Teeth
Amona's kitchen smelled of woodsmoke and dried peppers, and a single oil lamp stood on the scrubbed table.
She sat on the far side of it, with her cane across her knees.
"Shirts," she said.
Fionn and Mikel looked at each other.
"Amona," Mikel began.
"I raised your father. I changed your diapers. I have seen everything you have. Shirts."
Mikel pulled his over his head.
Fionn undid his buttons slowly and peeled the cloth off his shoulders.
He stood bare to the waist in the lamplight with his arms tight at his sides.
Amona rose.
She was a small woman, but she moved with great purpose, and she took Mikel's shoulder first.
Her fingers were dry and light.
They traced the half-moon of Fionn's teeth on the muscle, black and puckered, still raw after nearly a month.
"This is your bite," she said to Fionn.
"Yes."
"Bit him in the Ring," Amona said.
"I was trying to get loose," Fionn said.
"I know what you were trying."
She let go of Mikel and took Fionn's neck, turning his head to the lamp.
"This is his bite, the one from the hall. And this one, under the bandage, is from the road."
