Chapter 15: Alive Is Not Enough
On the third Tuesday, Tae-min did not come to the bench.
Seo-won sat there early with two paper cups, and later with two cold ones.
When the cups had been cold a long while his phone rang, and the screen said Captain Yeo.
"He's all right," Yeo said, before Seo-won could speak. "Hear that first. He's all right. Severance Hospital, the burn unit."
Seo-won did not remember getting into a taxi.
He remembered the cups, because he carried them in with him, and they were still in his hands in the corridor.
The squad stood outside the treatment bay in their sooty turnout pants.
Two of them looked at him and moved apart without being asked.
Tae-min sat on the edge of a gurney in a hospital gown with his right hand wrapped to the wrist in white gauze.
He was alive, and he was talking.
"It was a kitchen fire in a goshiwon," he was telling a nurse. "Ahyeon-dong. Grease. A man was asleep on the second floor."
