Chapter 16: The Drawing

The Han River in late November was the color of an old coin.

Seo-won walked the path at Mangwon in his shirtsleeves, because his coat was on another man.

Tae-min had not answered his texts in six days.

Seo-won had sent four, and then stopped, because four was already too many.

He sat on the bench where the picnic blanket had flipped over the brie.

The wind came off the water and went straight through him.

"You'll catch pneumonia," said a voice behind him.

Ga-ram stood on the path with a cardboard box in his arms, his round face red from the cold.

In the box were a desk lamp, a mug, a set of drafting pencils, and a plant that was mostly dead.

"They cleared our desks today," Ga-ram said. "Yours too. I brought it."

He put the box on the bench and sat beside it.

"Is that your whole desk?"

"Mine's in the other box. It's smaller."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. I'd do it again." Ga-ram looked at the river. "Hyung called me."

"He did?"

"He didn't say anything. He just asked if you'd eaten."

Seo-won put his face in his hands.

"I yelled at him in a hospital," he said. "In front of his squad."

"I heard."

"I said he left me."

"Did he?"

"No. Not this one."

"Then say that," Ga-ram said bluntly. "Say you were mad at the wrong man."

"It isn't that easy."

"It is, though. You're the hardest person I know to be around, and I've been your friend for nine years. So listen."

Seo-won lifted his head.

"You keep treating him like a client," Ga-ram said. "A watch, a leaf, a cafe. You're presenting."

"He doesn't want the presentation. He wants the napkin sketch."

"What's a napkin sketch?"

"Draw him something stupid and small. Something that's only for him."

"What do I draw?"

"I don't know. Where you want to live?" Ga-ram shrugged. "You always draw the answer to everything."

He stood, picked up his dead plant, and tucked it under his arm.
