Chapter 18: Eight Years

I didn't go after him right away.

I wanted to.

I stood on the catwalk with my hands on the cold rail and made myself wait, because he'd walked away from me on purpose.

At four in the morning I gave up.

I put Gran's photo in my shirt pocket, behind the two black ones.

I stuffed his jeans, a flannel shirt and his boots into a feed sack.

I took the thermos and the last of the cook's fried bread.

Then I drove down the ridge road in the dark.

I knew where he'd go.

Everyone in the pack knew where the old hall had been.

The north slope sat across the valley from Signal Ridge, a long bare hill above the river.

Eight years on, the grass had come back.

The trees hadn't.

Black snags stood all over it, stuck in the ground.

I parked at the bottom of the old road and walked up in the gray before dawn.

The foundation of the elders' hall was still there at the top.

A long rectangle of fieldstone, knee high, with fireweed growing up through the middle.

A big gray wolf lay on the stones at the far end with his chin on his paws.

His torn ear twitched when he heard me.
