The photo slid out into my cold hand.
I held it against my chest under the flannel to keep it warm, the way I'd held the one of Iris in the rain.
I didn't look.
I waited a full minute, standing in the snow in my bare feet.
Then I looked.
Gray.
Then lighter.
Then the gray went away, and there was a picture under it.
A picture of me.
Saturday morning.
I was sitting at the plank table on the rock below the lookout, in my canvas coat with the collar up.
There was flour on my cheek.
I was laughing so hard my eyes were shut.
The peaks behind me were white all the way down to the timber.
The cook stood over the griddle with her spatula raised, mid-yell.
Up on the catwalk, Sophie and Lowell leaned on the rail with their coffee, clearly arguing about something.
And next to me on the bench, Abel had his head thrown back, laughing at whatever I'd said.
That was all.
No fire. No ring. Nobody crying in a grove.
Just Saturday.
The door opened behind me.
Abel came out in his jeans and nothing else, and swore at the snow, and put his arms around me from behind.
I felt him through the bond before I felt his skin, warm and still half asleep.
