Chapter 11: Two Notes

I said nothing in the car.

Thea lay across the back seat with her head in my lap and her blood on my hands.

The driver took every corner.

He whistled the two notes again, softer, and then he caught himself and stopped.

I looked at the back of his neck for the whole drive to St. Anne's.

At the emergency doors two nurses ran out with a stretcher.

They took Thea from me, and a surgeon in green said "shoulder, through and through, she's lucky," and then the doors closed.

I stood on the curb with my hands held out in front of me.

"Ilse," Matthias said.

"Don't."

"Come inside and wash."

"Your driver."

Matthias went still.

"Your driver whistles," I said. "Two notes, low and flat. He did it for three days outside my cellar door."

"Ilse."

"Is that him?"

The driver had stopped beside the car.

He stood with his hands at his sides and his jaw set, and he did not look away from me.

I saw it then, the short left little finger, ending at the first joint.

Three days in the dark, I had never once seen his hands.

"Yes," Matthias said.

I did not feel anything for a moment.

Then I felt all of it.

"Go and sit in the car," Matthias said to the driver, gently. "Please."

The driver nodded and went.

Matthias walked me around the corner of the building to a bench under a security light, and I sat because my legs would not hold me.

"Tell me," I said.

"Three weeks before your wedding, I learned that Brigitte's steward was buying green rings." He kept his voice even. "I couldn't prove what for. I guessed."
