Chapter 15: The Dress

Ilse's POV

The box came to the Kell door at seven in the morning, tied with white ribbon.

The man who carried it wore a Reinholt tie and left before anyone could ask him a question.

I opened it in the front hall, with Matthias standing in the doorway behind me, unshaven, in yesterday's coat.

Inside lay my wedding dress, cleaned and pressed, with the veil folded on top of it.

It was the dress I had been meant to marry Lukas in.

Under the veil was a card in Brigitte's neat hand.

Noon, the hall. Wear it, sign it, and your father comes home. Ask your husband what he offered me last night.

I read it twice.

Then I turned around.

"You saw her," I said.

"Yes."

"Alone."

"Yes."

"You went to Brigitte Reinholt in the middle of the night and didn't wake me." My voice was perfectly calm, and I hated it. "What did you offer her?"

"The Kell dock share."

"All of it?"

"She didn't want it."

I laughed once, and it came out wrong.

"What does she want?"

"You," Matthias said. "At the altar, in that dress, with a pen. Your father sitting in the front pew until you sign."

"And you were going to tell me when?"

He did not answer at once, which was an answer.

"I meant to take him out of the hall myself," he said. "Every man I have, in the pews. You'd never have to touch the pen."

"You'd have walked me in there as bait, and not told me."

"No. I'd have kept you out of it."

"You decided once what I could survive." I held up the card. "Three days in a cellar, and I only found out why because I ran faster than your plan. You said you were sorry, and then you did it again."
