Chapter 9: Hospital Night

The waiting room at St. Anne's had a clock with no second hand and a row of empty chairs.

I sat down, and Matthias took the seat beside mine.

It was almost two in the morning.

A doctor with a tired face came out and said my father's heart had briefly stopped before they revived him.

"He's stable," she said. "We pumped out the medication. He was given a double dose of a beta blocker, at about eleven."

"By whom?" I said.

"The care home log says the night nurse. It's in her handwriting."

"The night nurse was not there at eleven. She left last night, and nobody has seen her since."

The doctor looked at me.

"I don't know about that," she said. "I know what the log says."

"Write down what you just told me," Matthias said. "Time, drug, dose. Sign it."

"I'm not sure I can."

"Then tell me who you'd rather I ask," he said, quietly, "and I'll ask them."

She wrote it down and signed it.

When she was gone I put my head in my hands.

"I told her I would read that chart to the three houses," I said. "I meant it as a threat. She treated it as a challenge."

"She set it up before you said it."

"What?"

"The nurse was gone from that building a full day before your tea. She'd had the nurse for a year, Ilse, and she had the nurse's post empty before you ever sat down." His voice stayed low. "She'd have done it anyway. You didn't cause this."
