Chapter 6: Black, No Sugar

The man in the gray jacket took his time reaching the counter.

He was about forty, clean-shaven, with a plain, tired face. He could have been a bank teller.

"A water, please," he said.

Clara gave him a cup. He paid with a five and told her to keep the change.

"Clara Mercer," he said, softly, so that only she could hear.

"Yes."

"I won't take much of your time. Your father tells me you're a sensible girl."

"He tells everyone that."

The man almost smiled.

"I'm only here because the loan was made out in your name," he said. "I don't like it either. I like it when the person who signs is the person who borrows. But I deal with the paper I'm given."

"I didn't sign it."

"It has your signature."

"It's a forgery."

"Maybe so." He sipped the water. "Do you want to tell the police that? It's your right. I'd just point out that then your father goes to prison for fraud, and the loan officer calls your financial aid office to tell them about the debt, and it doesn't matter who forged what. They freeze your degree until it's settled."

Clara's stomach turned.

"My degree?"

"Graduation is in what, ten days? Fourteen?" He tilted his head. "I'm sorry. I don't make the rules."

"What do you want?"

"Eleven hundred tomorrow. The first payment. Your father told me you'd be good for it."
