Chapter 3: The Watch on the Counter

Vivienne finds a platinum watch with a cracked crystal and the initials P.V.H. on the kitchen counter, and while questioning Stellan about it she palms an unsigned memo from his study that reveals a buyer is circling her firm's remaining independent partner.

The watch caught the morning light before I did.

It sat on the kitchen counter, exactly where the coffee machine should have been, face-up like it had been placed there on purpose. Platinum case. Cracked crystal, a single fracture running from the nine to the three. The initials P.V.H. were engraved on the back, small and precise, the kind of engraving that cost more than the watch itself.

I hadn't seen it the night before.

I hadn't seen it ever.

Stellan was at the stove, his back to me, sleeves rolled to his elbows. He didn't turn around when I walked in. He never did. The man could hear a door open four rooms away and still finish whatever he was doing before he acknowledged you existed.

'You're up early,' he said.

'You're in my kitchen.'

'I live here now.' He flipped something in the pan. 'As of last night. I thought we covered this.'

I crossed to the counter and picked up the watch. It was heavier than it looked. Cold. The kind of cold that meant it had been sitting there for hours, not minutes. Whoever had left it had done so before dawn.

'What is this?' I asked.

Stellan glanced over his shoulder. His eyes went to the watch, then back to the pan. The glance was too quick. Too deliberate in its casualness.

'A watch.'

'It wasn't here last night.'

'It was in my bag. I took it out this morning.'

'Why?'

He didn't answer right away. He plated whatever he'd been cooking, eggs, and carried it to the counter, setting it down next to the watch like the two things belonged together. Then he finally looked at me.

'It belonged to a roommate,' he said. 'From university. I keep meaning to return it.'

He didn't touch it.

That was the thing I noticed first. He'd taken it out of his bag, set it on the counter, and now he stood there with his hands at his sides, and he did not touch it. Stellan touched everything. He sat before being asked. He claimed rooms. But this watch sat on the counter between us like a thing he couldn't bear to pick up.

'A roommate,' I repeated.

'Yes.'

'You've never mentioned a roommate.'

'You've never asked.'

I turned the watch over in my palm. P.V.H. The engraving was worn, the edges softened, which meant it had been handled a lot. Or worn a lot. A keepsake, he'd called it. Keepsakes got handled. Kept close.

But he wouldn't touch it.

'P.V.H.,' I said. 'That's an odd set of initials for a roommate.'

'People have odd initials.'

'What was his name?'

Stellan picked up his fork. 'Why are you so interested in an old watch?'

'Because it's on my counter and I don't know where it came from.'

'It came from my bag. I told you.'

'You told me it belonged to a roommate. You didn't tell me his name.'

He took a bite of eggs. Chewed. Swallowed. The silence stretched, and I let it. I was getting better at that. At not filling the pauses he created.

'Peter,' he said finally. 'Peter Van Horn.'

Van Horn.

Madelief's surname.

I kept my face still. The coincidence was probably nothing. Van Horn wasn't an uncommon name in certain circles. But Stellan had never mentioned a Peter Van Horn, and he'd certainly never mentioned that his university roommate shared a surname with the woman who'd vouched for my character at our contract signing.

'And you've been carrying this around for how long?' I asked.

'A while.'

'You're a billionaire. You could have it shipped.'

'I prefer to return things in person.'

'Then why haven't you?'

The fork paused halfway to his mouth. A beat. Then he set it down.

'Because he's dead,' Stellan said.

That landed in the kitchen like a stone in still water.

I looked at the watch again. Cracked crystal. Worn engraving. A dead man's keepsake, sitting on my counter while my husband cooked me eggs and pretended it was nothing.

'I'm sorry,' I said.

'Don't be. It was a long time ago.'

'Then why do you still have it?'

He didn't answer. He picked up his coffee instead, and I watched him take a long drink, and I thought about how carefully he was holding himself. The stillness. The way he hadn't touched the watch once.

Something was wrong with his story. I could feel it in the back of my skull, the same pressure I felt when a structural load was off by half a degree. Not enough to see. Enough to feel.

'You should eat,' he said. 'The eggs are getting cold.'

'I'm not hungry.'

'You haven't eaten since yesterday.'

'You're keeping track of my meals now?'

'I'm keeping track of a lot of things, Vivienne.'

He said it without heat. Just a statement of fact. And that was worse, somehow. That was the thing about Stellan. He never raised his voice. He just told you the truth in that low, flat register, and the truth was always worse than any threat.

I set the watch back on the counter, exactly where I'd found it. I made sure my fingers didn't tremble.

'I have work to do,' I said.

'It's Sunday.'

'I have a project submission due in eight weeks. Sunday is a luxury I can't afford.'

I walked out of the kitchen before he could respond. Down the hall, past the living room, toward the study. My study. The one he'd commandeered last night when he'd moved in and claimed the whole penthouse as his own.

The door was open.

I stopped in the doorway and looked back toward the kitchen. I could hear him moving around, the clink of dishes. He wouldn't follow me. He'd give me space. That was his pattern. Push, then retreat. Let the silence do the work.

I stepped into the study.

It was messier than I'd left it. That was the first thing I noticed. Not chaotic, just... rearranged. Papers stacked differently. A drawer not quite closed. The small, subtle signs of someone who'd been through my things and tried to put them back exactly as they'd found them.

But Stellan was too precise for that. He'd missed the drawer by half an inch.

I crossed to the desk and opened it. My own files were still there, but underneath them, tucked into the back corner, was something that didn't belong to me. A single sheet of paper, folded twice, unmarked.

I glanced toward the door. Still clear.

I unfolded it.

The memo was unsigned. No letterhead. Just a few lines of text in a font I didn't recognize, printed on paper that felt expensive in a way that was hard to name.

'The independent partner is open to a formal approach,' it read. 'Proceed as planned.'

Below that, a date. Eleven months ago.

I read it again. Then a third time.

Independent partner. Formal approach. Proceed as planned.

The words were vague enough to mean anything. But in the context of everything I'd learned in the last twenty-four hours, they meant something very specific. Someone had been circling my firm's remaining independent partner. Someone had been doing it for almost a year.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't Stellan buying up debts on a whim after I sent him a photograph.

This was a campaign.

I folded the memo and slipped it into my sleeve, tucking it against the inside of my wrist where the fabric was tight enough to hold it. Then I closed the drawer and stepped back from the desk.

'Vivienne.'

I turned.

Stellan was in the doorway. He'd moved silently, the way he always did, and now he stood there with his coffee cup in one hand and his eyes on my face.

'I thought you had work to do,' he said.

'I was looking for a file.'

'Did you find it?'

I met his gaze and held it. 'Not yet.'

He didn't move. Didn't look at the desk, didn't look at the drawer, didn't give any sign that he knew what I'd just taken. But I felt the weight of the memo against my wrist, and I knew, with a certainty that settled cold in my stomach, that he was waiting to see what I would do next.

So this was the game now.

Fine.

I'd play.
