Chapter 9: Her Rule

"Not like this," Darius said again, and let go of my wrists.

I wiped my face with both hands.

"Then when?"

"When you're not crying in my doorway."

"I'm not crying."

"You're soaked, and you're shaking, and you've just learned your mother sold you a scholarship." His voice was rough. "Come in. Get dry. Sleep. Ask me again in the morning if you still want to."

"You think I won't."

"I think you should be sure."

"I'm sure."

"Then you'll still be sure at breakfast."

He took me inside.

He gave me a gray sweatshirt that came to my knees and left me alone in a guest room with a towel.

I stood under the hot water until it ran cold.

I thought about Luka's hand on my mouth, nine years ago, and then I thought about Darius holding my wrists, and how carefully he had done it.

I thought about how he had stopped.

At two in the morning I was still awake.

The house was dark and silent.

I walked down the hall barefoot, in his sweatshirt, and stopped at the last door.

It was open an inch.

I pushed it.

He was sitting up in bed in the dark with a lamp off.

"You came," he said.

"Yes."

"Come here."

"No," I said. "I'll come when I want to."

I crossed the room, and I stood at the side of his bed.

I could see his bare chest in the moonlight.

I could see his hands on the sheet, and they were very still.

"I have one rule," I said.

"Say it."

"Luka's name is never said in this bed. Not by you. Not by me. Not once."

"Done."

"And I decide. All of it. What and how and how fast. You don't touch me until I put your hands on me."

"Done."

"You do what I say, when I say it."

"Whatever you say," Darius said. "Every word."

I pulled his sweatshirt over my head.

Underneath I was bare.

I stood in front of him with my arms at my sides, and my heart was slamming so loudly that I could hear it in my ears.
